15 Best Things to Do In Ella Sri Lanka with Kids
If you’re planning a trip to Ella with kids, you might be wondering if it’s actually worth staying a few days… or if there’s enough to keep everyone entertained. We felt the exact same way before arriving.
We visited Ella with our 7-year-old during a Sri Lanka road trip. Beforehand we’d only seen photos of the Nine Arch Bridge, heard about Ella Rock and Little Adam’s Peak, and that was about it. I was honestly a bit worried we’d booked too many nights.
But I was so wrong. Ella is not an Instagram hype, it’s definitely worth it with kids.
Ella turned out to be one of those rare places where adventure, good food, and relaxed vibes all come together in a way that actually works really well for families.
You can do short hikes with big views, try unique experiences, and still keep things easy and flexible with kids.
In this guide, I’m sharing the best things to do in Ella with kids based on our own experience traveling here as a family. Including practical tips to make the activities work for your family.
And I close off this post with a few day trips to enjoy if you’re staying longer.

Ella family friendly activities
In Ella you can do short hikes with big views, enjoy easy food options (local and world cuisine), unique experiences, and if you’re into longer and more rewarding hikes that’s an option too!
Most activities on this list are close together, which means less time planning logistics and more time actually enjoying your trip. Enjoy the top things to do in Ella with kids!
1. Visit the Nine Arch Bridge with kids
Probably the most famous, and therefore most touristy thing to do is visiting the Nine Arch Bridge, or Nine Arches Bridge. It’s basically one of the best places to visit in Ella Sri Lanka.
So yes, you’ve definitely seen it before. It’s this big, beautiful stone bridge hidden in the jungle, with a train slowly passing over it like something out of a movie.
Our kid was most excited about the fact that he was allowed to walk on the train tracks. Don’t worry it’s safe. You’ll hear the train coming way before you even see it. So you have lots of time to get off the bridge or out of the tunnel, before the train is near.
We came by tuk tuk and parked about 100 meters from the bridge for a small fee (less than 1 USD). If you come by car you’ll probably need to walk about 300 – 500 meters.
Uneven dirt paths, greenery everywhere, the sound of insects, that warm humid air. The beautiful scenery made this outing a joy from the start. And then you get to the bridge and it’s even prettier than you imagined. Massive, curved, surrounded by jungle.
I imagined it to be way busier. Don’t get me wrong it was quite busy, even at 7am, which I highly recommend to avoid the heat and the crowds. But everyone kind of spreads out.
Some people were sitting on the edge of the bridge eating fruit or a sandwich, some were walking along the tracks, and others went straight into the tunnel.
The views from both sides of the bridge are stunning. Please don’t follow the lead of people heading into the tea fields.
Not only because you can fall and slip easily, but because they belong to a farmer. Sure, you’ll get an epic shot, but this is someone’s livelihood you’re ruining.
If the heat becomes too much or you’re not ready to say goodbye to the bridge, I’ve got a tip for you. Walk up the stairs to Soul Café (aka Cafe Soul Ella). Order a drink or meal, chill in the shade, and hopefully you’ll catch a glimpse of a train passing by. It’s a great photospot.
Note that the steps are hand carved for the most part. Only the last part are real steps. So for the most part the steps are quite uneven and when it’s rainy it must be pretty slippery. We haven’t tried it when it’s wet, but be aware.
Walking through the tunnel with kids
You know what’s crazy? People seemed unafraid to head into the tunnel immediately after arriving.
We decided to wait until a train passed, because they pass the bridge roughly every 2 hours. We really didn’t want to risk being in the tunnel, not hearing the train in time or wrongly thinking it would come from the other direction.
So that’s our top tip: enjoy the sight of the train passing by and after that walk through the tunnel so you know you’re safe. And always remember to keep your eyes and ears open. If for some reason another train arrives unexpectedly. Pick up your kids and run to the exit closest to you and jump to the side.

This is one of the great free things to do in Ella with kids. The only thing you have to pay for is the transportation to get there and away.
2. Try the Ella Swing
This was one of those moments that we didn’t plan it at all. We ran into the Ravana Big Swing on our way up to Little Adam’s Peak (more on that later).
We saw people swinging out over endless green, and of course our son went: Can we do that?
It’s this giant swing set up on a hillside, and when you’re on it, you swing out over the valley with nothing but jungle and mountains in front of you.
I was immediately up for it, but was kind of turned off by girls preparing for a full on photoshoot. You can rent dresses at this place and even a professional photographer.
Know that you don’t have to rent a dress, nor a photographer. They offered us, and others without the photographer, to take videos and pictures with our phone from behind. Always nice to have some pictures as a memory, right?
They take safety pretty seriously. My son and I wanted to go together and they not only checked his length, but also his weight to see if it was safe enough for him to join me.
The minimum weight is 30kg (66 pounds) and the minimum height is 90cm (2.95 feet).
If you meet the requirements then you can either go get changed in the dressing room or you stand in line. We only had 1 person in front of us, so we only had to wait 5 minutes.
While we were at the Ravana Pool Club (also on this list). I kept an eye on the lines for you. I never saw more than 5 people in line.
How does it work? They strap you in properly, check everything, ask if you’re ready to go, and then it’s just… that split second of “okay here we go.”
And then you’re out there. Floating for a moment, with this huge open view in front of you.
We absolutely loved it. My 7 year old was so excited. He wanted to go again, but unfortunately for him we had more to explore that day.

You can swing daily from 8.30am to 5.00pm. They enjoy a lunch break from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.
If you want to swing solo you’ll pay 5.000 LKR (about €14/$16). If you want to swing with 2 people (the maximum weight being 175kg/386 pounds) it will cost you 7.500 LKR (about €21/$24).
A photographer will cost you 2.000 LKR and a drone videographer (yes, that is also possible) 4.000 LKR.
A dress with a floral band will cost you 3.500 LKR.
They have special prices for locals.
Flying Ravana Adventures is the company offering this activity near Little Adam’s Peak. Here they run other activities as well, like ATV & MTB riding, archery, free fall jump, abseiling, and climbing wall. The last 2 are also on this list.
You can easily get tickets when you’re there. But if you like to prebook, getting tickets for the swing online is also possible.
3. Watch sunrise from Little Adam’s Peak with kids
If there’s one thing I recommend you to definitely do in Ella with kids, it’s this. Little Adam’s Peak is one of those hikes that sounds like a big deal, but if you do it early or late in the afternoon it’s doable for kids
It’s more like a steady walk uphill through tea plantations, with clear paths most of the way. Towards the top of the peak the paths get narrower and when you reach the steps you’re almost there. 300 steps and you’re at the top.
But the epic views start before you even reach the top. Rolling green hills, tea pickers in the distance. And if you go early in the morning you’ll get rewarded with soft morning light. It already feels special halfway up. This hike truly is one of the best things to do in Ella!
Our son needed a few snack breaks, but there were no complaints about it being too hard. We also saw a couple with a 3 and 5 year old and they managed to walk all the way up by themselves as well.
With kids younger than 3 I recommend using a baby carrier.
If you want to make this hike easier. Tuk tuks can get all the way up to Ravana Pool Club, which cuts about 800 meters off your hike.

4. Spice up your life at Ella Spice Garden
After a couple of active days, we needed something slower, but still fun. So we decided to visit the spice garden in Ella.
Sri Lanka is known as Spice Island, so this activity seems like a great opportunity to learn more about the spices coming from Sri Lanka. You can either walk around yourself or join a tour.
You walk into this small garden, and right away it’s all about smell. Fresh curry leaves, cinnamon, cardamom, pepper. Everything you usually only see dried and packaged. And here, it’s growing right in front of you.
Our son was surprisingly into it, mostly because it wasn’t just talking. You’re allowed to touch and smell things. And you can even do a spice tasting, as well as a tea tasting
The tour is in English and takes about 20 minutes. If you want you can also do a cooking class here. I’ve heard good things about it, but we skipped it, because we had already booked a class somewhere else.

Ella Spice Garden is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm. The fee is 100 LKR (about €0.28/$0.32 USD). The cooking classes start at 4.30pm until circa 8.00pm.
If you opt for the cooking class, the cost will be 7.000 LKR (about €20/$23 USD) per person.
5. Go ziplining from Little Adam’s Peak
If you’re looking for crazy things to do in Ella with kids? Then this tip is for you!
So right near Little Adam’s Peak, there’s this zipline, also offered by Flying Ravana Adventures.
Unfortunately, we actually didn’t do the zipline ourselves. Our 7-year-old would technically have been allowed, but after seeing the height and speed, we decided to skip it this time.
That said, we stayed nearby for a while (at Ravana Pool Club), so we saw dozens of people go down. And honestly, everyone came off absolutely buzzing.
You’re flying over tea plantations with wide open views, which makes this one of the more scenic ziplines we’ve seen.
Our take as parents: Under 8–10? Probably skip. 10+ and adventurous? This will likely be a highlight.
If you’re traveling with older kids or teens, this is one of those activities that adds a bit of adrenaline to an otherwise relaxed destination.

You can zipline daily from 9.00am to 5.00pm. They enjoy a lunch break from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. Do note that the last entry is 4.00pm.
They recommend kids being at least 12 years old, but kids ages 6 and up can zipline. We didn’t feel comfortable with our 7 year old ziplining and would agree that 10-12 is a more appropriate age.
Kids below 15 years old pay 6.000 LKR (about €17/$20 USD) and all others pay 9.900 LKR (about €28/$32 USD) per person.
6. Climb the Ravana Climbing Wall
Maybe this is one of the unusual things to do in Ella. But it’s great with kids.
Climbing a wall in Ella isn’t on every list, but it’s such a good option if your kids have energy to burn or if they would’ve loved to go ziplining or abseiling, but they’re a bit too young.
I promise, this is the very last Flying Ravana Adventures activity. It’s just a very large hub of fun things to do in Ella for families. We paid for all activities ourselves, so I promise you that we added these experiences because we genuinely love adventures like this.
It’s a proper outdoor climbing setup, with instructors and safety gear. Our 7 year old loved it. It still feels adventurous, but more controlled and it feels much safer for smaller kids.

You can go on the climbing wall daily from 9.00am to 5.00pm. They enjoy a lunch break from 12.30pm to 1.30pm. Do note that the last entry is 4.00pm.
Kids ages 6 and up can participate, but they do have to be at least 20kg.
There’s only one price for all: 3.000 LKR (about €8.50/$10 USD).
7. Visit a Sri Lankan Tea Factory
While Nuwara Eliya is arguably the best place in Sri Lanka to visit a tea plantation. But if you skip Nuwara Eliya, Ella is also a very good place to book a Sri Lankan tea tour.
You see tea plantations everywhere in Ella. But it’s much more fun actually understanding what happens after the leaves are picked. How do they make the tea?
When you book a tea factory tour you will walk through the tea plantation to see the different types of leaves.
We weren’t sure if this would be interesting for our 7-year-old, but it turned out to be one of those unexpectedly fun and educational stops.
The part he loved most? Actually picking the tea leaves himself. At first, he just grabbed random leaves, until the guide showed him which ones are used (only the top two leaves and a bud). After that, it turned into a bit of a game of finding the perfect leaves.
At the factory, you walk through the full process. Once the fresh leaves come in they will be dried, then rolled, and lastly sorted.
And then at the end, you sit down and taste different teas. Black tea, green tea, different grades. How much you get to taste depends on the type of tour you’ve booked and the types of tea they produce at the factory you chose.
A visit to a tea factory is one of the most family-friendly things to do in Ella.

There are different tea factories to choose from. Check the websites for opening hours, tours and prices.
The most famous in the Ella area are Uva Halpewatte, Ella Organic Tea Garden, and Halpewatte.
About 50 minutes from Ella, in Haputale, you find the tea plantation of the Lipton tea brand: Dambatenne.

Most activities are close together, but the heat adds up fast. We found doing one activity in the morning and one in the afternoon worked best.
8. Join a Sri Lanka cooking class
We can honestly say that Sri Lanka cuisine is one of the best we’ve ever tasted. We loved the food and joined multiple cooking classes during our Sri Lanka family road trip.
Because tasting amazing food is one thing, but actually making it changes everything. We can actually try to recreate dishes at home.
I already mentioned that we skipped the cooking class at Spice Garden Ella and went with Ella Sri Lanka Mom’s kitchen cooking class.
We were greeted by a mother, named Kama, and chef Irosha, at Kama’s family home, which made the class feel extra special. Much more personal which made this experience more about connection. They were very sweet and attentive to our son.
Fresh vegetables and spices were already laid out. The instructions they gave us were very clear. And we also loved that we got to grate a coconut for the sambol by hand.
We made 4 curries: dhal, chicken, mango and potato curry and also made coconut sambol and pappadums.
The class takes about 1,5 hours and then another half an hour enjoying the dishes made. Eating something you just made together just hits differently. Our son definitely dares to taste more when he is involved in the cooking. So if your kids are the same, this is all the more reason to take a cooking class.
If you’re in Ella during rainy season, a cooking class is one of the best indoor things to do in ella with kids.

We started at 11.00am. But you can also book a class at 4.00pm.
Kids pay 5.500 LKR (about €15.50/$18 USD). People over 16 pay 6.900 LKR (about €19/$22 USD).
Top Sri Lanka cooking classes in Ella
If you only book one experience in Ella with kids, I’d make it a cooking class.
It’s one of the few activities where everyone is fully engaged. And you leave with something you can actually recreate at home.
9. Relax at Ravana Pool Club
We ended up here after hiking up Little Adam’s Peak for sunrise and it was exactly what we needed.
We had been quite active in Ella and needed a little chill time. We played in the pool, lounged on sun beds and enjoyed lunch and drinks.
Then it was time to go, because the type of guests arriving were slowly changing and a DJ started playing. We love a good party, but not with our 7 year old around.
When we overheard the 20 year olds next to us that things were about to get lit, it was our cue to go.
Ravana Pool Club is very family friendly until about 1.00pm – 2.00pm. And it’s a great spot to chill and cool off in the pool.
If you’re in Ella with toddlers, this is a great place to be in the morning.

The pool is open from 9.00am – 8.00pm and you pay 5.000 LKR (about €14/$16 USD) for 2 hours of access to the pool and a returnable towel.
You can also opt for a 3 hour package for up to 4 people (ideal for families!) for 25.000 LKR (about €70/$80 USD), and 7.000 LKR (about €20/$23 USD) of that amount can be used as credits for your order at the bar or restaurant. This package includes sunbeds.
No interest in the pool, but you just want to have a drink, snack or meal? That’s also possible. The restaurant is open from 11.00am – 6.00pm.
You have to pay a fee of 5.000 LKR (about €14/$16 USD) , which you can fully redeem when ordering something. They do this to avoid people from using this place and the views for a photo opportunity, without spending a dime.
10. Hike Ella Rock (best for active families)
So this is where the hiking gets more serious. Ella’s Rock is not the same as Little Adam’s Peak.
The hike is longer, less clearly marked, and feels more like a proper hike. You’re walking through railway tracks, jungle, and open ridges. It’s basically more of an adventure.
Depending on your pace and the amount of stops the hike takes around 3 to 4 hours.
We heard from families doing it with older kids and teens, and they were loving it. But it’s not something I’d do casually with younger kids. And so we decided to skip this hike.
But if your family enjoys hiking and you want something more challenging, this hike is definitely worth it.
My man and I honestly suffer from FOMO, and we will definitely do this hike when we return and our son is a more experienced hiker.

You pay a small entry fee of 930 LKR (about €2.60/$2.80 USD) per adult which will be collected by staff near the summit. No ATM, so make sure you’ve got the required amount in cash.
11. Visit Ravana Falls and see the monkeys
This is the easiest “wow” stop in Ella. You literally pull over, step out, and the waterfall is right there. As are hundreds of monkeys. Fun for the kids, but be aware. They steal food and don’t hesitate to jump on you to get it. Don’t stop here if you’re snacking on something.
The waterfall is beautiful, so if you’re in the area (we stopped here on our way from Ella to Yala NP) it’s definitely worth a peek.
There are stalls selling food, but I would not take the risk if I were you. Chances are you’re buying it for a hungry monkey.
There’s also a huge souvenir stall right next to the waterfall.

12. Visit Dhowa Rock Temple
This was one of those stops that almost didn’t make it into our itinerary, and ended up being one of the most peaceful moments of our time in Ella. This outing felt like stepping into a quieter side of Sri Lanka.
Dhowa Rock Cave Temple is also known as Kumbatissa Ariyagala Vehera. Named after the chief priest who provided refuge to the king. But it’s also called Dowa Rajamaha Viharaya and Dhowa Rocyou’lle.
This buddhist temple is built into a rock, just a short 15 minute drive from Ella. And the main thing you see is this large, unfinished Buddha statue carved directly into the stone.
No crowds, no noise. Just a few locals and the sound of birds. Our son immediately noticed how quiet it was and instinctively started whispering, which kind of set the tone.
It’s not a wow activity like the Nine Arch Bridge, but that’s exactly why I’d recommend it.

13. Take a tuk tuk tour to Lipton Seat for epic views
We went back and forth on whether a hike to Lipton Seat would be worth it with a kid. In the end, we decided to skip the hike and go for a tuk tuk tour and honestly, that made all the difference.
The ride itself turned into part of the experience. We feel like one of the best things to do in Ella is to join a tuk tuk tour to Lipton Seat.
When you join a tour they’ll pick you up from your accommodation early in the morning in a tuk tuk and you can enjoy a scenic drive of about 1,5 hours. Most tours stop at Dambethenna Tea Factory as well, so keep that in mind if you’re interested in visiting a tea plantation. This is a great combo!
Winding roads, cooler air the higher you go, and those endless tea plantations stretching in every direction. Our son loved the ride, especially the feeling of being out in the open with the wind rushing past.
But the main event is reaching the famous viewpoint Lipton’s Seat. You get the most amazing panorama view of the surrounding tea plantations, mountains and valleys.
Here you’ll also find the statue of Scotsman Sir Thomas Lipton enjoying a cup of tea. Lipton is the founder of the Dambethenna tea plantation. He often visited this viewpoint to enjoy the view and survey his plantations. He got this statue as a testament to his contributions to Sri Lanka’s tea industry.
Want to take the hiking trail up to Lipton Seat? This hike is about 7km long, taking up 2 -3 hours depending on the amount of stops and your pace. The hike is quite steep at points, so do take note of this, and bring lots of water and hike in the morning to avoid the heat.
We chose the tuk tuk option over hiking, and I’d 100% recommend that with kids. You still get the views, but skip the steep, tiring climb, which makes a big difference in the heat.

14. Eat at Rainbow Cafe
It might be a bit weird to add a restaurant to the list of best things to do in Ella, but we ended up at Rainbow Cafe more than once and it was always packed during all hours of the day, which probably tells you everything. So I figured it deserves a spot on this list.
Good food (local and world cuisine), relaxed atmosphere, and enough variety that everyone finds something they like.
And let’s face it, sometimes finding something familiar on a menu is exactly what you need after a full day.
We had lunch here on multiple occasions and dinner once (you can build your own burger here, which our little man was very excited about).
Everything was always fresh and delicious. Some of the best food in Ella in our opinion.

15. Ride the train from Ella to Kandy or Nuwara Eliya
One of the most popular attractions in Sri Lanka is taking the Ella train. A weird term for it, because most people take the train from Kandy to Ella or from Nuwara Eliya to Ella (or reversed), so why call it the Ella train, instead of the Kandy train or the Nuwara Eliya train. I have no idea, but that’s what it’s most commonly revered to.
You’ve probably seen this train ride everywhere, and yes, it’s worth it. I don’t think there are many people that will travel to Sri Lanka without adding this scenic train ride to their bucket list. And rightly so!
The train winds through tea plantations, mountains, small villages… the views are constantly changing. And one of the biggest draws: getting your picture taken while hanging out the side of one of the doors.
We only allowed our son to stick his head out of the window while I took his picture from the next window (not shown here, because we decided to not show his face on the internet unless he’s unrecognizable). There were lots of parents who did allow their kids to hang out of the door, mostly while a parent held on to them. But we just didn’t want to take any risks.
While he was sleeping, I did the pose while holding on to the door frame, which is when my man dropped our GoPro into the great unknown (RIP dear GoPro!).
It’s a good idea to bring snacks. If you go all the way to Kandy the ride takes about 7 hours. Vendors come by with fruit and other snacks, but we hear some questionable things in relation to hygiene. That’s why we brought lots of water and brought our own snacks.
We traveled from Kandy to Ella with this epic train in about 7,5 hours and it was one of the highlights of our Sri Lanka family trip.
But I have to be honest. The most beautiful part of the ride was between Nuwara Eliya to Ella. With kids these 3 hours are maybe a better choice than the full 7,5 from Kandy.
People who’ve read my other posts about Sri Lanka might remember that we traveled through Sri Lanka by tuk tuk. So what did we do with our rented tuk tuk? This depends on where you’re headed to. You can find the train schedule and the prices per leg on the Sri Lanka Railways site.
It’s best to prebook tickets, because they sell out fast. The best way to do this is via Sri Lanka Railways. You can prebook 30 days in advance. So make sure to visit the website 30 days before you need the tickets, so you’re sure you get them in time.
To get an idea of the prices: the entire ride between Ella and Kandy costs 1.250 LKR (about €3.50/$4 USD) for first class, 650 LKR (about €1.80/$2 USD) for second, and 400 LKR (about €1.10/$1.30 USD) for third.
Out of luck? You can also visit 12Go they also sell these train tickets but for a slightly higher fee.
If all else fails there’s the option of booking tickets through an intermediary. That’s way more expensive, but it sounds like a good third option if you really want to do it.

There are lots of things to do in Ella Town, but what are some things to do around Ella?
Take a day trip to Nuwara Eliya
We really loved Nuwara Eliya and recommend spending a night or two there. But if you don’t have the time or don’t want to change accommodations too much, you can also take a day trip to Nuwara Eliya from Ella.
People call Nuwara Eliya Little England, and as soon as you get there, you see why.
Colonial-style buildings, cooler temperatures, and golf lovers can visit a golf course that looks like it was dropped straight into the hills.
But the biggest draw: all the tea plantations. This is the perfect place to visit a tea factory. Our top tip is Bluefield Tea Factory.
Enjoy the slow pace of Nuwara Eliya, the great food and of course: the tea.
Take a day trip to waterfalls (Diyaluma + more)
Sri Lanka has so many waterfalls, many in the Ella area.
A must if you want to check out some waterfalls is Diyaluma Falls.
It’s the second tallest waterfall in the country, but the real magic is at the top.
You hike up (it’s not too bad, but definitely bring water), and instead of just looking at a waterfall, you see natural infinity pools.
Like, proper rock pools right at the edge, where water flows over and drops down the mountain.
We found a quiet spot, let our youngest paddle, and just stayed longer than planned.
Other waterfalls you can add depending on your energy:
- Bambarakanda Falls (the tallest in Sri Lanka)
- Dunhinda Falls (a bit more of a walk, but really beautiful)
- Ravana Falls (part of the list, but great if you combine it with a few others in the area)
Take a day trip to Udawalawe National Park
Udawalawe Safari Park is known for its elephants. And is a less crowded option than Yala National Park.
Its open landscape makes it much easier to actually see animals. And makes the herds of elephants you see all the more impressive.
I think we saw about 50 elephants on our morning safari.

Take a day trip to Yala NP for a safari
The most famous national park of Sri Lanka is Yala. Yala NP has the biggest population of leopards in Sri Lanka.
While lots of people see them here, they’re still elusive and you’re extremely lucky to spot them. We did 2 early morning safaris (the best time to spot animals) and didn’t. Luckily we did in Wilpattu.
But even if you don’t spot a leopard, there is no reason to be disappointed. You can spot kingfishers and other gorgeous birds, crocodiles, elephants, grey langurs, deer, water buffaloes, and jackals.
